The Exercise Excuse

It’s not easy fitting exercise into an already busy life. Luckily, when it comes to physical activity, every move counts. Even a few extra steps a day can make a difference! Here are some ways to overcome the things that may be standing in your way to a more active and healthy lifestyle:

"I don’t have time to exercise."

  • Walk or ride your bike to work or the grocery store.
  • Get off the bus or park a few extra blocks away from your destination.
  • At work, walk or jog during your lunch break.
  • Climb the stairs instead of taking the elevator.
  • Do push ups, crunches, and other exercises during TV commercials.
  • Make family walks a nightly tradition.

"I don’t have the energy to exercise."

  • Being physically active actually gives you more energy! When you feel low in energy, try walking or jogging for a small amount of time to see how you feel. Odds are, you will have more energy and will feel like continuing with the exercise.
  • Walk a little more each day.
  • Eat small, more frequent, nutritious meals to avoid dips in your energy level.
  • Do a Simple Workout when you do feel energetic.

"I don’t have anyone to exercise with."

  • Invite family and friends to walk, hike and bike with you.
  • Make it a tradition to have some sort of physical activity, like soccer, kickball or basketball, at family events and special occasions.
  • Join a community walking club or sports league.
  • Tell your family and friends to visit this website to learn more about the importance of being physically active to their health and quality of life! Ask them to support you in your efforts.

"I can't afford a gym membership or any equipment."

  • Activities like walking, jogging or playing with your kids don’t require use of a gym or equipment.
  • See our Simple Workout for a convenient way to exercise without a gym membership.
  • Use free hiking trails and bike paths.

"It's too hot outside to exercise."

  • Do a Simple Workout indoors.
  • Take walks or jogs before the sun rises or after it sets.
  • Take advantage of community pools or nearby lakes by going for a swim or just to splash around and have some fun with your kids!
